MARGAO: Verna Sports Club shunted out Navelim Sporting Club 6-5 via the tie-breaker to march into the quarter-finals of All-Goa 15th Fr Basilio Andrade memorial inter-village football tournament organized by A.A.de Majorda, at Musson ground, Majorda, on Wednesday.
There was no score at lemon break and at the end of regulation time the teams were tied 1-1. Both the teams started the game on cautious note, as a result the play was confined to midfield. There were few thrills at either ends.
Crossing over, both the teams showed better application and urgency and fired couple of pot shots against the rival citadel. Verna’s breakthrough came in the 48th minute when striker Santan Rego bulge the net.
Down by 0-1, Navelim Sporting Club intensified their attacks and created many openings and their efforts bore the fruit when Bitu Singh neutralized the lead.
In the penalty shoot out, Savio Fernandes, Shaun Pereira, Santan Rego, Basil Rego and Santan Pereira converted for Verna Sports Club while Bitu Singh, Wilton Gomes, Samson Pereira and Derrick Gomes converted for Navelim Sporting Club.
