Sadly, the project has so far failed to successfully take off till date, with the civic body literally struggling to keep the project going for want of workers and bins. A month now since it was launched with much fanfare, and members of the Solid Waste Management Cell now even contemplate to change the nature of the project from door-to-door to building-to-building – a suggestion that has invited sharp reaction from the city fathers.
As things stand today, the civic body has distributed around 15,000 plus bins to the city holds, even as it has received around 25,000 black bins and 17,000 bins. The projected number of households located in the commercial capital is pegged at around 40,000.
On the manpower front, though the civic body has given its nod to engage 200 daily wage workers, around 170 workers are reporting for work on a daily wage of Rs 300. The shortage of workers has not only come in the way of the distribution of bins to the households, but in the collection of waste. That’s not all, a solid waste management cell member informed the workers have not been put to optimum use given their connections with the city fathers, who have blocked attempts to set a target of covering 200 households.
