PORVORIM: Mapusa Police has booked a case against the social science teacher of a government high school in Bardez, after he was accused of slapping a 15-year-old student on Tuesday.
This is the second instance of corporal punishment in schools in North Goa within a week.
According to Mapusa Police, the victim’s mother complained that the teacher hit the boy on his ear. When the boy, who was studying in Std 9, returned home at about 1.45 pm after school hours, he refused to have lunch and started crying and complained of ear pain.
The boy later narrated the incident to his mother, who immediately took her son to the District Hospital at Mapusa for treatment. After the boy was discharged from the hospital, the mother went to Mapusa Police station and lodged a complaint against the teacher on Tuesday night.
Mapusa Police registered the offence against the teacher under Section 323 of Indian Penal Code and Section 8 of Goa Children Act. Police Sub Inspector Sadashiv Hansikutti is investigating the case.
Speaking to Herald, Mapusa Police Inspector Tushar Vernekar stated that a police team had gone to the school on Wednesday to investigate the incident, but the teacher had not reported for duty at the school. “If found guilty, the teacher will be arrested,” said PI Verneker.
Earlier, on June 26, the headmaster of a government high school at Pissurlem-Sattari was arrested on charges of assaulting two students from his school.
