MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council has shifted gears to get rid of the garbage nuisance at the black spots and haphazard dumping of garbage at transfer stations.
A team of experienced MMC staff led by senior officers has taken upon themselves to keep strict night vigil at the black spots. However, the lack of priority in using the resources has created a gap between the effort and results.
The black spot near the Costa factory in Aquem was cleared by the MMC staff and labourers on Tuesday after the stink reached the households nearby. The staffers have decided to keep a night vigil at this spot to intercept persons dumping mixed garbage there. The staff also sprinkled bleaching powder on the road at this spot to control the smell which was emanating from the leftover leachate of the garbage.
The problem of garbage is getting out of hand in Margao as un-segregated waste that is not picked makes its way to the black spots. The problem of garbage has not spared even the Hospicio hospital. A huge heap of waste is found behind the hospital. The staffers have to literally make their way through the waste to reach the section.
The Hospicio staffers informed that the garbage hasn’t been picked for the last seven days. Rains have strewn the garbage all over the Hospicio campus. Fear has spread that the patients and people may contract diseases due to the garbage consisting of medical waste, food, dry plastic and others. The people have expressed anger at the MMC for ignoring Hospicio where at least 250 people are taking treatment at any given time.
“A small Sonsoddo is forming here behind Hospicio and the garbage is at least 2 tonnes. People are facing hardships to take the deceased out of the post mortem section,” Savio Coutinho said.
Hospicio Medical Superintendent Ira Almeida complained that restaurants are dumping their garbage inside the Hospicio which has resulted in such a large heap. She also said that they are managing their waste for now and have also segregated the waste which was earlier not picked up. “We have a digester and we will be installing a composter tomorrow,” Almeida said.
