PANJIM: The Goa Football Association on Wednesday conducted the player draft for the Women Football league in Panjim.
The third edition of the league will feature two new teams with some teams backing out of the league.
The four-team league will feature Churchill Brothers, Albert Developers and two new teams PVC Parra and Bidesh XI Assonora after FC Goa opted out of the league.
A total of 148 players were drafted in four teams via the lots system. All four teams equally got 37 players.
It has been learnt that the teams will have to cut down the squad to just 25 players after putting all 37 players through trials.
“This year the balance of the teams are good and we will have a quality league despite having just four team,” said GFA vice president Lavinio Rebello.
For the last two years, Vedanta had been supporting the league and has a contract with the State football association for another year.
“Vedanta have agreement for three years and in all fairness they should honor the agreement for better sense and for the love of football,” he added.
It is learnt that the league draft process was started on August 16 and for the past two months the association was working on the same.
When asked about FC Goa, a source from GFA said, “We didn’t ask any club to leave. FC Goa were part of every meetings earlier but in the last minute they decided to opt out. There is nothing truth in their statement. Their official gave false statements wherein they had their representation in every meetings we had earlier during the discussions about the league,” said the source.
It is also learnt that if Vedanta opt out their support for the women’s league, the league would be called as Senior Women’s League.
