MARGAO: Fearing a potential danger, residents and local representatives on Tuesday urged the South Goa Collector’s office to ensure the safety of pedestrians and commuters during monsoon by addressing the issue of overgrown trees in Sao Jose de Areal village.
Curtorim Zilla Panchayat member Michelle Rebelo, along with South Goa District Congress Committee president Savio D’Silva and GPCC General Secretary Moreno Rebelo, met Additional Collector Srinet Kothwale, demanding the pruning of overgrown trees in Sao Jose de Areal.

“Pruning of overgrown trees is needed in Sao Jose de Areal and throughout South Goa, especially given the heavy rainfall the State has been experiencing in recent weeks. This measure is crucial to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists who are at risk of these overgrown trees collapsing,” said Michelle.
She highlighted the situation around Bethany Convent in Areal, where overgrown tree branches compromised the safety of students using the pavement around the church.
She also mentioned the encroachment of tree branches upon electric wires in Gudi, recalling previous incidents where lives were lost due to similar circumstances in Navelim last year.
Michelle demanded underground cabling in Sao Jose de Areal due to the presence of large vegetation in the surrounding areas. These trees often damage electrical wires during rain and strong winds, necessitating the move to underground cables for enhanced safety and reliability.
