PORVORIM: With the population on the higher side in North Goa, including the huge influx of tourists, the district has been generating a large amount of waste on a daily basis.
The information tabled by Michael Lobo, Minister for Waste Management, on the floor, states that North Goa generates 468 tons of waste per day (TPD) (61%) while South Goa generates 298 TPD (39%).
“The resident population in North Goa district is 8.80 lakh in comparison to 6.99 lakh of South Goa. Moreover, the north district has more influx of tourists in comparison to the south. Hence, generating higher amount of waste. Similarly, the average per capita generation per day in the north district is also higher than that in South,” the written reply to a starred question by Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat read.
The total waste from residential households is 465 TPD in the State with a per capita average of 294 grams per day (gmpd). North district generates 56% while South district generates 44% of the total residential waste in the State.
Coming to the non-residential and street sweeping category, the total estimated waste is 300 TPD wherein north district generates 69% and south district generates 31%. Minister Lobo, further stated that the total estimated solid waste generation in the State for the year 2018, from all type of generators, is 766 TPD.
To another question on whether the government conducted a cost-benefit analysis study of each of the Waste Treatment Technologies available, the minister stated that the technology adapted in Saligao facility is Mechanical Bio-Methanation Treatment Technology.
“Mechanical Bio-methanation Treatment Technology is technically evaluated by Expert Committee of Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (GSIDC); the same technical expert committee which has been adopted by Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) for the technical evaluation of Solid Waste Management Facility (SWMF) project at Saligao and Cacora under the Chairmanship of Dr Sharad Kale, Head, Technology Transfer & Collaboration Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai. GWMC has also formed a Technical Advisory & Scrutiny Committee which will be evaluating all the proposals submitted by the project proponents,” Lobo added.
