BELGAUM: As Belgaum gears up for elections to Lok Sabha on April 17, illicit Goan liquor is gradually being transported to different parts of the district despite stringent measures initiated by the authorities.
According to reports, 50,660 litres of different brands of Goan liquor has been seized by the authorities since the election code of conduct has been in force.
Speaking at a news conference here on Monday, Deputy Commissioner N Jayaram said the administration has set up 22 check posts at all the strategic points bordering Goa and Maharashtra to control the inflow of illicit Goan liquor that arrives in the district.
DC Jayram further informed that 27 persons have been arrested for allegedly transporting illicit liquor in the district.
Giving further details, DC Jayaram said 327 sector officers have been appointed to observe the implementation of election code of conduct.
“Officials have been directed to maintain a close vigil on the activities including distribution of liquor to lure voters,” he added.
“Apart from police force, 25,000 staff is being mobilized to conduct free and fair elections in Belgaum district, which has two parliamentary constituencies comprising Belgaum and Chikkodi. Filing of nominations will commence on March 19,” he said.
Meanwhile, the fact that despite setting up of check posts on Goa border at Kankumbi, Anmod and Londa, the thriving of illicit liquor trade has baffled the authorities.
