Margao councillor pushes for eviction of footpath vendors

MARGAO: Councillor Mahesh Amonkar has warned the Market Committee of the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) to immediately remove all encroachments on the footpaths by non-authorised vendors, failing which, the civic body could invite legal consequences from the High Court (HC), in light of recent strictures imposed on the MMC for the Sonsoddo debacle.

Amonkar emphasized that the HC had previously issued directions regarding footpath encroachments, which have not been followed by the MMC.

During a recent Market Committee meeting chaired by MMC Vice Chairperson Deepali Sawal, discussions centred around the inspection of municipal markets and the need to address footpath encroachments.

The Committee approved certain applications for the transfer of shops between family members, provided that proper legal formalities are followed. However, applications for shifting shops between markets were rejected.
