CURCHOREM: The people from Quepem Municipal Council (QMC) would be sealing the fate of 55 candidates contesting from 13 municipal wards on Friday.

According Deputy Collector of Quepem Nilesh Dhaigodkar 11957 voters are registered to cast their votes in 13 wards of the Quepem municipality from 14 polling booths.
Besides various local issues in the respective QMC wards, most of the voters and particularly from Cusmon and Condi wards who share the main market were complaining about the parking spaces for the vehicles in the market.
Vice President of Quepem Citizen Committee Evangelisto D’Costa said that the picture of Quepem market did not improved much as basic issues of road, water and market remained the same even after several years. “In spite of several request the QMC failed to provide suitable and sufficient parking space in the main market. Vehicles are increasing day by day and the little available space becomes congested once few vehicles are parked and as a result people keep their vehicles anywhere creating hurdles not only pedestrians but for free movement of vehicles.” said D’Costa.
Urging the people to elect good candidates this time, the president of Quepem Adivasi Sangtana John Fernandes said that for the last several decades some tribal areas of municipalities are still not developed yet. “In some areas still there are no roads at all which can be done by spending money from tribal funds. There is no proper bus stand in the market and travelers have to stand on roads to board the buses. There is no stand for taxi motorcycles and no space is notified for parking. All the major government departments offices-deputy collector, mamlatdar, RTO, PWD, including municipality administrative building are situated in the heart of market adjacent to each other and people not only from Quepem and all the surrounding areas are coming here and there is no sufficient place is not available for them to park their vehicles. This is pity and we feel shame to tell that we are staying in municipal area.” said Fernandes and added that it is council’s duty to provide all these basic needs to its people.
Meanwhile Amol Kanekar and Manuel Colasso who were the former councilors representing the Condi and Cusmon wards respectively are this time contesting from the same Condi ward as Cusmon ward is reserved.
