NAVELIM: United club of Benaulim SC got the better of Cuncolim Union 5-4 via the tie-breaker to move into the finals of the All-Goa Late Jose Bento Furtado memorial football tournament, at Rosary ground, on Saturday.
Keaan Rodrigues of Benaulim should have found the ball at the back of Cuncolim net in the 4th minute but the Cuncolim defender Raghuvir Gaonkar tackled his move.
The best chance fell to Mahesh Gaonkar off a Nilesh Velip connect it was easily saved by Benaulim Vhelian Rebello as the shot lacked power in the 6th minute. Krishna Shirodkar the lanky defender of Cuncolim headed into net in the first goal of the match for Cuncolim Union in the 8th minute.
As the match progressed, Raja Chalaeadi of Benaulim took control of the ball from Milred Rebello who dribbled past only to see his shot hit the crossbar.
As the match progressed, the Cuncolim players Edney Fernandes and Bharat Gaonkar missed to score in the 36th and 40th minute respectively.
In the second half, Joel Fernandes’ header missed the net in the 46th minute. Declan Carvalho’s sudden move levelled terms for Benaulim in 56th minute.
Just four minutes left before final whistle, Joel shot the ball over the cross bar. In the tie-breaker, United club of Benaulim proved to be better shooters.
