MARGAO: A large illegal cattle slaughter hub was raided by the Colva police after a tip-off by representatives of Animal Welfare Board.
Police arrested one Irfan Bepari who runs the slaughter house at Nagwada, Betalbatim and rescued at least seven cattle in the adjoining properties.
According to information by officials of Animal Welfare Board of India, the honorary animal welfare officers Harshwardhan Rawat and Anjali Anand noticed the cattle near the house at midnight, when they saw buffaloes tied near a house in a suspicious condition.
They later called Colva police, requesting them to raid the slaughter hub. Subsequently, police raided the place and took Irfan into custody.
According to police, three buffaloes and four cows were rescued in the raid and they also found three freshly-cut cattle at the venue. Police have confiscated the skin and bones of 42 cows, which are suspected of having been slaughtered at least two months ago.
However, Irfan was released on bail, later that evening.
The animal welfare officers informed that there were skin of not just cows but also of calves, which was stored here.
Anjali has demanded that the Goa government must go hard on the illegal slaughter houses all over Goa and efforts should be made to stop them once and for all.
