MARGAO: Commuters and Benaulim villagers are expressing frustration as the road alongside the under-construction Western Bypass has deteriorated following the rains, posing inconvenience and safety concerns for those traveling through the area.

The Varca-Margao Road near Umiya Mercado, extending for nearly one kilometre, is in particularly poor condition with rainwater stagnating due to the uneven surface.
Residents have alleged that the road’s condition has deteriorated rapidly over the past few days.
Freddy Fernandes, a resident of Benaulim, highlighted the danger posed by potholes on the road, which are difficult to spot during the rains as they are filled with water. “We have witnessed riders, particularly women, falling off their bikes due to these potholes,” he said, adding that the movement of machinery involved in the Western Bypass construction has further worsened the road’s condition.
Francisco Barretto, another resident, reported that the road becomes particularly unsafe for driving at night due to poor lighting, making the potholes even harder to see.
