MARGAO, MARCH 30
Fire engulfed the Sonsodo garbage dump yard on late Monday evening, with the fire brigade nowhere to be seen around as per the High Court directions.
Fire was first spotted at around 8 pm near the second gate towards Curtorim side of the dump yard. A lone worker tried to extinguish the raging fire with an water can, but in vain.
It was only when the fire showed going out of control, the fire services were intimated by the Civic officials.
When contacted, the fire services used around three water tanks to bring the fire under control, but not before raising serious questions over the fact that no fire tender was found stationed near the dumping site since this evening.
When a Herald team proceeded toward to Curtorim at around 6.30 pm, no fire tender was found at the site.
Incidentally, when contacted, personnel of the fire services informed that a fire tender was constantly stationed at the site since morning. However, when his attention was drawn to the fact no fire tender was stationed at the site at around 6.30 pm, the fire personnel maintained the firemen had returned back to the fire station for dinner.
The Margao fire station has three fire tenders and sources in the know say that it is not  feasible to station a tender continuously at the dumping site.
The Margao Municipal Council had asked the fire services to station a fire tender at Sonsodo between March 27 till the onset of monsoons as per the directions of the high court to contain fire at the site.
