Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and the NRI Commissioner Dr Wilfred Mesquita, brother of Dr M Mesquita who has been suspended by GMC, has refuted allegations that he was shielding his brother.
The issue was also raised in the monsoon session of the Legislative Assembly in August by independent MLA Vijay Sardessai, after which the government had constituted an internal committee to look into alleged irregularities by the two government doctors.
The committee comprising GMC doctors, in their report submitted to chief secretary R K Srivastava, have allegedly prima facie indicted the two doctors.
Sardessai had alleged that the doctor involved in the corruption is the brother of BJP leader.
“He is my brother but that does not mean he can engage in corrupt practices,” said Dr Wilfred speaking to Herald.
Dr Wilfred said that if the clinical trials are illegal and those suspended are found guilty of making money by sidelining the government, they should be punished.
On the allegations against him that he is shielding his brother, Dr Wilfred said “I am in no way going to protect anybody. I am enemy number one of corruption. Be it my mother, father, son, wife. I will never support them if they are corrupt.”
“On the contrary I will ask the government to take strict action against the guilty,” he said.
“Protecting corruption is a bigger crime than corruption itself. Corruption is and will always be an anathema to me. Therefore, I will never protect anyone who is involved in corruption whether a friend or relative however close,” he said.
