MARGAO: A joint meeting was convened by the South Goa District Collector on Tuesday to go over the arrangements of the upcoming Margao feast fair, with the objective of ensuring that there is no traffic congestion during the days of the fair.
Even as officials from the Margao Municipal Council (MMC), Sewerage Corporation, South Goa Planning and Development Authority (PDA) and Traffic Police, besides the Margao MLA Digambar Kmaat present, the councillors of the Goa Forward Party (GFP) objected to the venue of the fair.

However, MMC’s BJP-panel councillors led by Chairperson Damodar Shirodkar gave an assurance that all the agencies concerned will coordinate thoroughly to ensure that the fair is held without causing any inconvenience to the public.
Earlier, the GFP councillors from Fatorda and party leaders demanded that the fair be shifted to the outer ring road or somewhere else in Margao and warned that the South Goa District Administration would be held responsible for the mess and traffic congestion at the Old Market Circle that would be caused, if the fair is not shifted.
However, Shirodkar, who held an inspection of the ground, said that there would be round-the-clock monitoring of the fair by all three market inspectors. He added that the sewerage work, for which the road near the KTC bus Margao has been dug up, is important, but that the traditional fair should not be cancelled.
He added that four parking lots have been selected including one on land owned by the SGPDA and that there will be facilities for toilets and garbage collection at the fair grounds as well. He added that care will be taken to see that the stalls do not encroach upon footpaths or overstay after the feast and that all stall owners had to sign a conditional agreement.
