MAINA: Miranda Caterers, Davorlim edged past Royal Caterers, Curtorim 7-6 via the tie-breaker in the final to emerge champions in the Friends Circle Boys, Maina football tournament played at St Rita Church ground, Maina on Sunday.
Both the teams displayed an attacking football with Miranda Caterers scoring 1-0 through Rexon Miranda’s rasping shot off a connect by Silvan Miranda in the 10th minute.
Royal Caterers’ Jovan Dias shot hit the rival crosspiece and rebound back to play in the 12th minute. Thereafter, Mable Miranda’s placement shot made it 2-0 for Miranda Caterers in the 19th minute off a supply by Joel Miranda.
Crossing over, Royal Caterers scored 1-2 through Jovan as he fired from a close range off an assist by Tony Dias in the 47th minute.
Royal Caterers levelled 2-2 through Princely Ointon’s header off a cross by Joflex D’Costa in the 49th minute.
At the end of regulation time, both the teams were held to a 2-2 draw.
In the ensuing tie-breaker, Miranda Caterers scored through Welmick Miranda, Mable Miranda, Selwyn Miranda, Sanju and Rexson Miranda while Royal Caterers netted through Mackson Sequeira, Mario, Jovan Dias and Princley Ointon.
The following individual prizes were awarded: Best goalkeeper Rosefen Miranda (Miranda Caterers), best defender Joflex D’Costa (Royal Caterers), best forward Selwyn (Miranda Caterers), best shot of the tournament Jovan Dias (Royal Caterers), first scorer of the final Rexon Miranda (Miranda Caterers), best discipline team Santan caterers, Sanguem.
The winners received Rs 20,000 plus trophy while the runners-up took home Rs 15,000 plus trophy. Chief guest Curtorim Constituency MLA Reginald Lourence gave away the prizes.
