The spirit of Christmas came alive in Virnoda, Pernem, as Chotanagpur Youth Goa, led by Fr. Michael Pereira, SVD, and Peter Borges, the Chairperson of the Child Right Commission, Government of Goa, extended the warmth of the season to the Vanarmare Kathkari tribals.
Christmas, known globally for spreading joy and happiness, holds a special significance as it marks the birth of Jesus Christ. Beyond religious observance, it is a time for sharing love, kindness, and creating magical moments with those we cherish. In line with these sentiments, the Chotanagpur Youth organized a festive program for the Vanarmare Kathkari tribals, bringing together dances, games, and shared celebrations.
The program kicked off at 10:30 am, featuring lively dances by the Chotanagpur Youth group, engaging games for children, youth, men, women, and couples. The Vanarmare Kathkari tribals actively participated in every activity, radiating excitement and wholehearted joy. The highlight of the event was the tribal dance, a testament to the spirit of unity and shared festivities.
Fr. Michael Pereira, SVD, expressed the significance of coming together to share the joy of Christmas with the tribals. He noted that while they may not fully grasp the meaning of Christmas, the event showed them that there are people in the world who embrace them with joy and happiness.
Members of the Chotanagpur Youth group shared their reflections on the experience. Miss Jenifa expressed her delight at the opportunity to share Christmas joy with the tribals and expressed her willingness to make it an annual tradition. Melwin, another youth, shared that it was his first time celebrating Christmas with such a community and expressed his happiness at being part of the celebration.
Anjali, a youth participant, highlighted the joy of seeing smiles on the faces of the tribals, especially the children. Mr. Hanumant, the leader of the Kathkari tribals, expressed gratitude on behalf of the community, thanking Peter Borges and Fr. Michael Pereira for their support.
As part of the festivities, Peter Borges distributed kitchen utensils, water tubs, and blankets to the families. Fr. Clifford and Venesa Coelho, who also work with the tribals, added to the vibrant atmosphere of the day. The program concluded with prize distribution and a sumptuous lunch for all, leaving a lasting impression of festive warmth and camaraderie.
Chotanagpur Youth expressed their gratitude for the wonderful day and shared their anticipation for future visits, promising to organize more activities for the Vanarmare Kathkari tribals.
