MAYEM: The no-confidence motion against Bicholim Municipal Council (BMC) Chairperson Anisha Vernekar and her deputy Narayan Betkikar could not be passed as the five signatories to the motion remained absent on Monday.
According to reports, presiding officer Satish Desai learnt about the development at the eleventh hour, due to which he conducted the proceeding as per the protocol and declared the motion “failed” only when the ruling group comprising five councillors raised their hands and protested against the motion.
It may be recalled that Councillors Riyaz Beig, Kamlakar Teli, Kamlesh Teli, Ajit Birje and Karuna Govekar had served a notice of no-confidence motion against Vernekar and Betkikar.
Sources informed that hectic efforts were on to unite the rebel group and solve the crisis. Finally, the efforts gained fruits as the five signatories remained absent and the no-confidence motion failed.
Meanwhile, Chief Officer Bhanudas Naik who was present for the election said the five signatories have submitted a notice of withdrawal to the DMA and to him.
Ruling group Anisha Vernekar, Narayan Betkikar, Premamad Mayekar, Shashikant Naik and Anita Harmalkar were present for the meeting.
