MARGAO: Hosts Cana Benaulim Sporting Association breezed past Navelim Sporting Club 9-8 via the sudden-death to storm into the finals of 37th All-Goa Cana-Benaulim inter-village football tournament at St John de Baptist ground, Benaulim, Monday. The teams were locked goalless at the end of the regulation period.
Heavy rains throughout the day made it difficult for the teams as they struggled to adjust on the mucky field.
The game was confined to the midfield in the first session as the strikers lacked fire power.
Post resumption, the teams intensified their attacks and raided each others citadel but could not score.
The tie-breaker also failed to break the impasse but Benaulim had the last laugh in the sudden-death.
In the penalty shoot-out, Vincy Fernandes, Jaison Pereira, Gregfern Fernandes, Xamaro Rodrigues, Roday Chickoto, Sujeet Mandrekar, Denzil Dias, Cardiade Dias, Polvin D’Silva scored for Benaulim while Kingsley Costa, Jaison Pereira, Allister Gomes, Bitu Singh, Araudin, Evelon Gomes and Berwyn Telles converted for Navelim while Delvin Costa failed to score.
Earlier, at half time, ex-footballers from Benaulim Menino Ampem Fernandes, Victor Rodrigues, Gregory Baprebab and Rumado Ringo were felicitated.
