PANJIM: The Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) has directed the North Goa Superintendent of Police to inquire into a lathi-charge incident wherein the National Student Union of India (NSUI) students were caned on their way to the official residence of Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant last month.

As per the order, the SP has been asked to submit a report on or before March 2.
The incident pertains to demand for online examination during rise in COVID-19 cases in the State. On January 8, while the NSUI students were trying to meet Sawant and were walking towards his official residence from Church Square in Panjim, police constables deployed on duty had resorted to lathi charge on the students.
Subsequently, NSUI President Naushad Chowdhari had lodged a complaint with the Goa Police and the GHRC.
According to Naushad, they were supposed to meet the Chief Minister with a request to conduct an online examination on account of the spike in COVID cases. However, they were restrained by the police from going ahead and were detained without listening to their grievances.
The NSUI had named one Nilesh Naik, Head Constable and Duty Master attached to Panjim Police Station, as accused person, who resorted to lathi charge without permission from the authorities.
