CALANGUTE: It is meant for the use of pedestrians, but a footpath in Candolim is not being used for the purpose it was constructed for but it is now benefiting a different set of users.
Two-wheelers and four-wheelers are seen parked on the footpath, blocking and hindering the movement of pedestrians using the footpath. Parking of vehicles on the footpath causes considerable inconvenience to locals, as they are then forced to walk on the road which is often waterlogged.
A local said the footpath was constructed for the pedestrians, but is being misused.
“Tourist vehicles are seen parked on the footpath. Locals and hoteliers also make use of the footpath to park company or taxis. Hence, we are forced to walk on the waterlogged roads,” added the local.
When contacted, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo said the footpath is meant for pedestrians and not to park vehicles. “I will direct Calangute Traffic Cell PI Rahul Parab to fine any vehicle found parked on the footpath. However, I will re-work the footpath with good pavers as the existing one is not ideal for walking,” said Lobo.
