MARGAO: The long pending issue of waste collection from the 300-odd city Hotels and Restaurants was finally resolved on Tuesday following a settlement between the South Goa Hotel and Restaurant Owners Association and the Margao Civic body.
Association President C P Jaggi along with his office bearers today held a meeting in the chamber of the Chief Officer Narayan Sawant and discussed the issue threadbare.
After much discussion, it was finally decided that the hotel and restaurant owners would clear their arrears as per old rates up to August 2014 via instalments by December 2014. It was also agreed that the new rates shall be applicable with effect from September 2014 and that the MMC shall collect the fees on monthly basis.
As far as waste bins are concerned, it was agreed that hotel owners will make the provision for their own bins. Association President Jaggi has requested the chief officer to ensure that the waste is collected on daily basis and the waste should not be allowed to lie at the hotel premises overnight.
Solid Waste Management Cell member Savio Coutinho appreciated the stand of the Hotel Owners Association and appealed to them to help the Council in making Margao a clean city. Similar meetings shall be held with other stakeholders, informed Chief Officer Narayan Sawant.
Also present at the meeting were Mahendra Shetty and R S Pirampalli of the Association, Sanitary Inspector Viraj Arabekar and waste management cell engineer Deepak Dessai.
