Porvorim : It is just not mixed garbage the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) has been receiving live stray pets too, wrapped in polybags and dumped along with the waste. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar informed the House that the State run plant has been getting cubs of dogs and cats which are alive as a part of the garbage collected from various areas.
“There are at least 20-25 cats and 30-35 dogs around the waste management plant. People dump dogs and cats who are alive, who are rescued from the garbage during segregation,” he said replying to a starred question on the concluding day of the monsoon session of the Goa Legislative Assembly on Friday.
Parrikar was responding to a question by BJP’s Nilesh Cabral about processing of Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) collected at the Sewerage Plant and its transportation to cement factories in Karnataka. “RDF is a mix of garbage and we get all kind of waste in it including plastic which needs to be burnt at 1,200 degree centigrade so that it does not produce toxic. That is why we have to send it to the Cement factories,” he said. The reply further mentions that from 2015-2018, a total of 12066 tons (quantity) of RDF has been sent to Vasavadatta Cement factory in Sedam, Karnataka; while 377 tons are sent to ACC cement factory in Wadi-Karnataka; and 28 and 27 tons are respectively sent to Ultratech Cement Limited in Andhra Pradesh and J K Cement factory in Maddapur in Bagalkot-Karnataka.
The CM went on to add that the mix garbage comprises of torn tyres and tubes, clothes, thermocol, leather, soiled fraction of papers, shoes, etc.
