PANJIM: Even as Panjim police are investigating the burglary at a city jewellery store, Goa Police has launched a parallel probe to inquire into the authenticity of the alleged crime that occurred on Saturday.
Govind Salkar, who owns a jewellery store Salkar Jewellers, in the Panjim municipal market, had filed a police complaint against two men who he claimed threatened him at knifepoint and robbed Rs 7 lakh cash and one gold chain, worth Rs 36,000 from his store.
A preliminary inquiry has so far revealed that Salkar’s business was allegedly running at a loss and he had recently obtained a gold loan of Rs 7 to 8 lakh from different banks. Moreover, Inspector General of Police Sunil Garg said his shop was allegedly targeted some years back wherein gold worth approximately Rs 1.20 lakh was stolen.
He added that under insurance cover jewellers get the sum insured after getting a certificate of theft from the police.
“We are probing the genuineness of the case. Many things have surprised us during the probe,” he said, claiming that North Goa SP Priyanka Kashyap has been personally monitoring the progress of the case. Police also said that there are two theories coming up in the case.
When Herald contacted Salkar, he agreed with the police facts regarding the alleged burglary and loan. “My shop was burgled some years back. But the culprits are still not found…. I have taken a loan of Rs 7 to 8 lakh for my business,” he said.
Salkar revealed that he opens his shop at 10am and breaks for lunch at 1:15pm, and thereafter operates between 4:15pm till about 7pm.
