CARMONA: During the Carmona Village Panchayat meeting held on Friday, it was resolved to conduct a special meeting to deliberate on the Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP) issue following representations received from the villagers.
Carmona Sarpanch Allwyn Jorge informed the media persons that “the villagers have pointed out that as per the CZMP, the entire River Sal has been designated as Port limits which means that it remains under the control of MPT. This is unacceptable to the villagers as private land and khazan owners will be ruined if this is true. The dredging of River Sal seems to be a well calculated move to make a navigational channel for movement of cargo and barges.”
“We will plan for a site inspection at this special meeting and also I would like to check the sea worthiness of the dredging barges and if they are polluting the River Sal which is already contaminated with sewage discharge and other effluents hazardous to marine life which has seriously affected it’s eco system and perished various shell fish in the river. We have also received requests from the villagers for postponement of the public hearing concerning the CZMP which we shall forward accordingly. The Carmona Village Panchayat will file its say at the hearing after receiving suggestions from the villagers,” said Allwyn.
