MARGAO: Even as police are grappling with the case of housebreaking in broad daylight at Raghukool Apartments which is an “U” shaped building with only one entrance that is also the exit point, locals are wondering why the inhabitants had not installed CCTV cameras that would have helped police nab the culprits.
In fact soon after its inauguration, Fatorda Police Station personnel visited each and every premise in their jurisdiction distributing advisories both for residential houses as well as premises used for commercial purposes.
Pointing out that burglaries are crime of opportunity, police advised people on security measures so as to reduce opportunities to robbers and other criminals.
Installation of a CCTV camera network with good night vision has been advised for both residential as well as commercial establishments. While for residential complexes minimum 15 days data storage has been recommended for commercial establishments minimum 30 days data storage has been advised.
Both have been advised to employ security guards who will wear an uniform carry a whistle and torch and have an ID card on them. It has been advised to employ security guards only from registered security agencies and also verify the guard’s antecedents with the police.
Pointing out that thieves do not like good lighting, it has been advised to install adequate lighting specially outside the building and also to have the compound wall and entrance gate of adequate height to prevent surreptitious entry.
Besides, all have been asked to install anti-burglary alarm system and get the trees and hedges around the building trimmed to reduce cover for miscreants. All have also been advised to install grills for ventilation ducts and also replace the latch and key system of locking doors with deadbolt locks.
Occupants of residential as well commercial establishments have been advised not to open doors for unknown people and also install banners or stickers or posters announcing that the area is under surveillance.
Residents have also been advised to have a peep hole with 180 degree viewing and also stop delivery of papers and milk if the occupant is not going to be at home as piled up papers is a sure sign that the house or flat is not occupied.
All residents have been very strongly advised to keep all valuables and jewellery in a bank locker and not at home and also keep the doors and windows closed at all times.
Besides this, the commercial establishments have been advised to have a strong room as prescribed by the Reserve Bank of India and install door frame metal detectors at entry points which entry points have been advised to be minimum.
The commercial establishments have also been advised to have minimum three locks for the main door and strengthen all doors and windows besides also providing fire fighting equipment.
