PANJIM: Congress has appealed to the Goans to beware of the backstabbing by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, which the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Girish Chodankar said has been a phenomenon of the BJP since the 1990s.
Addressing the media at the Congress House on Wednesday, Chodankar accused the BJP of destroying democracy. In the backdrop of defection by 10 Congress MLAs to the ruling side he said, “We had already announced the packages that were offered to the MLAs and BJP had responded. BJP has decided to destroy democracy. The way Amit Shah is destroying it at Centre, BJP State President Vinay Tendulkar and Chief Minister Pramod Sawant are doing it in Goa. They do not have principles, morality and ethics left in the party.”
Giving a list of BJP’s alleged backstabbing of the various political parties and the citizens, Girish said, “Since 1994 when first they entered the Assembly with 4 MLAs, they began their betrayal. In 1999 they betrayed MGP on the eve of Assembly elections and then they betrayed Dr Willy (Wilfred D’Souza) and backstabbed him. Thereafter they got (Francisco) Sardinha to break away from Congress, made him CM and in 11 months even he was betrayed and backstabbed. Then (Ramakant) Khalap was betrayed and backstabbed.”
He further said that the irony of the BJP’s history is that despite the backstabbing politicians and citizens do not realise their downfall. “The BJP did not stop here on medium of instruction issue they even betrayed RSS, their parent organisation. On the mining issue Goans have been taken for a ride. In 2017 Goa Forward Party and MGP fought against them and after the results both the parties betrayed the Goans and joined hands with BJP and now the BJP has backstabbed the two parties,” he pointed out.
“I appeal to the people of Goa to beware of the knives with which the BJP has been backstabbing everyone who supported them and it’s a matter of time when the 10 MLAs will also be backstabbed,” he said.
