PORVORIM: In a major daylight robbery, jewellery worth a combined Rs 40 lakh was stolen from two flats around the Mapusa police station.
This is the fourth such burglary, besides the robbery-cum-murder of a Mapusa jeweller, in close proximity to the police station within barely five months, as ornaments and cash worth a staggering Rs 2.17 crore have been stolen from five premises.
Mapusa police said, burglars entered the flat on the third floor of Damodar Apartment at Ansabhat-Mapusa belonging to Dipali Dhawasker and decamped with gold and silver ornaments worth Rs 36 lakh and cash of Rs 19,000.
Police informed that, Dhawasker, had closed her flat and had gone to her shop at about 12 noon. However on her return at about 2 pm, she found the door open and her ornaments and cash missing from the cupboard. The building is situated behind the Mapusa police station.
In the second incident that took place around the same time, burglars entered the flat of Lavina Madgaonkar on the second floor of Garden Centre Building, opposite Mapusa police station, and stole jewellery worth Rs 4 lakh and cash of Rs 4,000. The burglars entered the flat by breaking open the latch of the front door when the inmates had gone out.
Police rushed to the site with a dog squad but were unable to get any clues. Police Sub Inspector Sachin Lokre is investigating.
The fact that two burglaries have taken place in close proximity to the Mapusa police station has alarmed residents in the area. What has also added to the concern is that this is fourth such burglary, besides the robbery-cum-murder, in the vicinity of the police station within barely five months.
