PANJIM: Mormugao Port Trust has recently procured a Harbour Mobile Crane of 120 metric ton capacity at a cost of Rs 28 crore from M/s Italgru, Italy. The cost has been partly funded to the tune of Rs 13 crore by the Ministry of Commerce under ASIDE Scheme.
This Harbour Mobile Crane is capable of handling containers, break bulk, dry bulk cargo, project cargo, etc, and is a unique facility that Mormugao Port Trust has made available to its users. It is the highest capacity crane that any major port of India has made available for their customers.
The crane was commissioned on July 12. With the commissioning of this crane, the Mormugao Port has acquired the capability of providing handling facility for multi commodity cargoes being imported and exported through the port. This would further boost the cargo operations at the port and help in attracting additional traffic from the hinterland and facilitate MPT’s bid to change its image from a mono-commodity to a multi commodity port.
Some of the MPT Trustees visited Berth 10 on August 30 and witnessed the operation of the harbour mobile crane which was loading granite blocks on the ship M V Team Worth destined for the Port of Shivu in China.
