MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council Standing Committee has given a nod for a ‘Garbage Sentinel’ scheme to keep a check on garbage dumping in open spaces.
The committee has also decided to impose a blanket ban on plastic in Margao municipal jurisdiction through a council decision. The MMC has also conveyed its decision to ban the use of plastic for the Holy Spirit feast fair.
The Standing Committee on Thursday held a meeting after being in news for last one week over the Sonsoddo fire.
The MMC has decided to have a garbage sentinel scheme to keep an eye on garbage being strewn at the ‘dark’ spots in Margao, Fatorda and wards under Curtorim.
MMC Chairperson Babita Angle said, “The Garbage sentinel scheme is aimed at keeping a vigil on dark spots. This is a suggestion that came from the chief officer. Since we face flak for the garbage issues, we are thinking over this.
She said that the scheme would go through the scrutiny of the council to make sure that no one is targeted.
As far as the Holy Spirit feast fair, the chairperson said that the Standing Committee has decided to ban the use of plastic at the feast. “We have decided to ban plastic at the feast fair and once ratified by the Council we are directing the Chief Officer to ban plastic within the MMC,” Angle said.
She also informed that the Standing Committee discussed and was unanimous on not allowing more than five food stalls at the feast strictly with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) compliance.
The MMC has earlier issued a public notice to all the residential, commercial and market, complexes and other garbage generators to undertake segregation of waste at all level including household/market complex/business establishments/market.
The Council has warned that it would on the spot recommend disconnecting the water supply in case of the notice violation.
