MARGAO: The government circular of reopening of schools from Std I to XII from February 21 onwards for students of class I to XII resulted in parents and students rushing to purchase the school uniforms and other stationery items on Friday.

At the same time several parents seemed angry at the Education Department for announcing reopening of schools after two years at such a short notice. There was lot of rush at shops selling school uniforms and stationeries. Even the shops selling school shoes were crowded.
Speaking to Herald, Jennifer Fernandes, a parent whose two kids are studying in primary school was upset at the administration for reopening schools at such a short notice.
“I have already received the message from the school pertaining to the same, but there are hardly three days left and we are yet to purchase the necessary items. I need to stitch a new uniform for my kids and it won’t be possible to do so in three days,” she stated.
She further clarified that they are not against the reopening of schools. But enough time should have been given to prepare for the same.
Savita Naik, a parent whose child is studying in one of the schools in Margao also pointed out the inconvenience being caused by the notice that has given the parents barely three days to prepare.
“The decision taken by the Education department is not bad. But they should have given us more time. In any case the current academic year is about to end. The government should have reopened the schools from the new academic year. There was no need to rush,” she said.
Assistant Director of Education Department, Central Zone and Principal of Multipurpose Higher Secondary, Borda Jose Gomes said that at the moment the schools are conducting the exams of XI standard.
“We are following the system of batch wise classes, but our focus is on completing the theory and practical exams,” he said.
According to sources, many educational institutions of Salcete are yet to inform the students and their parents about the circular issued by the department, as they need to ensure cleaning and sanitation of their facilities.
