PANJIM: The State government has called for a special session of the Goa Assembly on October 20 to pass the National Judicial Appointments Commission Bill-2014. (NJACB) This bill was passed by a voice vote in the Parliament recently.
The bill seeks to replace the collegium system in the selection process and give the executive an equal role in judicial appointments. Being a Constitutional Bill it has to go through the motion of seeking consent of different States before getting the President’s assent.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said that at least 50 per cent States have to ratify the NJAC Bill before it can be sent for Presidential assent and implementation. “Hence a special assembly session is being called on October 20, to pass the resolution for ratification,” the Chief Minister said.
Parrikar said that the session will not have any business apart from passing of the Bill.
The constituting of National Judicial Appointment Commission comes as the 121st Constitutional Amendment Bill 2014.
