BORIM: Eleven candidates withdrew their nominations for elections to the Ponda Municipal Council (PMC), leaving 60 candidates to contest the May 12 council polls.
According to information from the Deputy Collector’s office, 71 nomination papers were declared valid after the process of scrutiny, while 11 candidates withdrew their nominations on Saturday.
They were provided with symbols in a special meeting convened to make them aware of the code of conduct. There were no withdrawals from Wards 2, 5, 8, 9 and 14.
Many candidates attended the meeting convened by Returning Officer Johnson Fernandes, in which they were informed about the election process and guidance on implementing the code of conduct. Ponda Mamlatdar Amul Gaonkar was also present at the meeting.

BICHOLIM: Fifty-three candidates are in the fray for the Sanquelim Municipal Council (SMC) elections to be held on May 12, after 28 of the 81 candidates withdrew their nominations on Saturday.
Speaking to reporters, Presiding Officer, Narayan Gad, said there are 11 wards for the elections to the SMC, of which wards 2, 5, 8 and 11 have been reserved for women, ward 1 for ST and wards 6 and 10 for OBCs.
There are 7,148 voters (3,587 males and 3,561 females) who will exercise their franchise at the polls.
Candidates contesting the elections were allotted symbols by Gad, who also briefed them about the rules and regulations of the election. He also answered different queries raised by the contestants.
Informing that a candidate can spend a maximum of Rs 75,000 as expenses during the campaign period, Gad stated that candidates are prohibited from defacement to public property and are to intimate election authorities in advance regarding public meetings and rally routes.
