After offering a mixed bag of films across multiple
genres, 2017 was sort of an average year for Konkani
cinema. But we have entered a brand new year and
from what we hear, 2018 seems to be a busy one for
the Goan film industry. Filmmakers and actors are
finding their schedules to be busier than the last year
and they seem to be focussing all their energies into
projects at hand.
One of the most awaited releases of the year,
undoubtedly has to be ‘Planning Devachem’ that
recently released its trailer in the city. Directed
by Rajesh Fernandes and produced by Severino
Fernanades, the film stars Tapan Acharya, Prince
Jacob, Cecille Rodrigues, Seema Butelho, John
DSilva, Kenny, Annie Quadros, Anil Pednekar, Sunil
Pednekar, Ron Rodrigues, Neilia Fernandes, Socorro
Dsouza and John Aguiar. The film is touted to be
packed with action scenes that have never been seen
before in Konkani cinema.
Goan filmmaker Miransha Naik, whose first indie
feature, ‘Juze’, has been well received at various film
festivals, earning critical acclaim, is yet to release in
India. The film is releasing in France on January 17,
2018 and Naik hopes for a release date in India to
follow subsequently. And while that is happening,
Naik has already gotten his hands into his next film,
the script of which, he says, has been ready for quite
some time. The film is going to be based on the
reserved community in Canacona and Naik is unsure
of whether the film will be made in Konkani or Hindi.
‘Zanvoy No. 1’, starring noted Marathi actress
Varsha Usgaonkar is one of the films slated to
release early in the year. Written and directed
by Harry Fernandes Barkur, whose previous
Konkani films include ‘Noshibacho Khell’ and
‘Sophiya’, ‘Zanvoy No. 1’ also stars Kevin D’Mello,
Josita Anola Rodrigues (Miss South Asia Teen
and finalist of World Teen Super Model of
South Asia), Prince Jacob, Stany Alvares, Rons
London, Sujatha Andrade, Ranjitha Lewis,
Lyshon Fernandes and Deepak Paladka, a wellknown
actor from Dubai. Actor Kevin D’Mello,
who stars in the movie, has another film that
in post production, which should release after
‘Zanvoy No. 1’. Directed by Joywin Fernandes,
the film ‘7 Days’ stars Rajdeep Naik, Prince
Jacob, Samiksha Naik, Sonam Morajkar and
many other Goan actors, apart from Kevin. The
film also stars noted Marathi and Hindi actor
Anant Jog.
After raking in critical acclaim for what is
perhaps the most successful Konkani film yet,
Bardroy Barretto is working on a film that he
stresses is going to be completely different
from ‘Nachom-ia Kumpasar’. While rubbishing
rumours of a sequel to ‘Nachom-ia’ being in the
pipeline, Bardroy sheds more light on the project:
“I’m working on a film with football as a way of life
as the crux of the story. The film is going to be set
in the Goa of ‘70s and ‘80s.” Bardroy has adopted
a different way of approaching the script. For the
last one year, he has been doing research through
interaction with football players and people of that
era. According to Bardroy, a lot of interviews have
been done, out of which, some stories will make
their way to the script. The film is less likely to be
completed in 2018 but the work is on in full swing.
