PANJIM: Goa Police hit out at the Human Rights Commission (HRC) for taking immediate cognisance of violations involving the police but turning a blind eye to their problems.
Speaking at the launch of the Panjim chapter of International Human Rights Association, Inspector General of Police Sunil Garg spoke on a number of issues the police endure in the performance of their duty.
“The HRC never points out human rights violations against us. There will not be a single case of such nature. On the contrary there are several cases slapped against the police,” he said.
The IPS officer also spoke of the time when a policeman was known for abusive language. “But now such behaviour is not tolerated in the department. It is a disciplined force and we work towards community police,” he said.
Expressing dissatisfaction that human rights violations against other sections of society are barely highlighted in the country, the officer stated that NGOs and related organisations could play a major role to bring the issues to the fore. “Constructive ideas should float,” he said.
Additional Collector Swapnil Naik, also present at the function, revealed how the previous government was not in favour of setting up the HRC in Goa.
