Gawas elected chief of Navelim Comunidade

Other office bearers elected are Laxman Gawas (mukhtayar), Anand Gawas (treasurer), secondary committee: Rupesh Gawas (president), Atchut Gawas (mukhatyar) and Shailesh Gawas (treasurer).
Pravin Gawas was appointed as the inspector for the election. He was assisted by Comunidade Secretary Santosh Salgaonkar. The winning panel defeated the panel led by former Sanquelim MLA Pratap Gawas.
After election, the winning panel met Sanquelim MLA Dr Pramod Sawant, who congratulated them on their victory.
Narvekar to head Vivekananda’s Sarth Samaroh Samiti
MAYEM: Tukaram Narvekar was unanimously elected as president of Swami Vivekanand’s 150th birth anniversary Sarth Samaroh Samiti which has been formed to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekanand.
Other office bearers elected are Dr Guruprasad Kapadi, Parish Khanolkar and Ramakant Shetye (vice presidents), Uday Kudalkar (chief working executive), Srikrishna Dhond (assistant chief executive), Vallabh Salkar (treasurer), Atmaram Gaonkar (joint treasurer) and Dr Subodh Kasar, Sagar Shetye, Satyawan Harmalkar, Pramod Gaonkar, Vivekanand Naik, Dr Madhav Lele, Anant Samant and Adv Dhaktu Pal (members).
The first programme of the celebration will be held on January 12 at 5 pm, where a Shobhayatra will be carried out from Wadakade-Bordem, Bicholim, and culminate at Gaonkarwada-Bicholim in a public meeting.
Pissurlem Credit society posts profit of over Rs 11 lakh
MAYEM: Pissurlem Urban Co-op Credit Society has posted a profit of Rs 11.44 lakh during the financial year 2011-12.
Speaking at the 12th annual general meeting held recently at the society’s headquarters under the guidance of Ashok Dhawaskar, Society Chairman Pundalik Parab said the services of the Society which were limited to Sattari taluka have now been extended to Bicholim taluka. Vishnu Parwar put forward a proposal to open a branch at Valpoi, while Govind Khanolar suggested opening one more branch at central place at Sanquelim.
Parab informed that the strength of the shareholders has been gone up to 1,781.
Earlier, Manager Suryakant Paryekar read the annual report, while Sanjay Kesarkar welcomed the gathering, compered the programme and also proposed the vote of thanks.
Other major issues of development were also discussed during the meeting.
Konkani Video Film Festival at Margao
PANJIM: Media People Goa in association with Film Producers Association of Goa and Ravindra Bhavan, Margao will be organizing the first Goa Konkani Video Film Festival 2013 from January 13 to 15 at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao. The film festival will be held in two categories under Video Feature Films and Songs and Jokes Videos. The film entered will be screened for public and the winners will be awarded in various categories as per the film festival regulations. The last date for entry of films is January 6. Konkani musical show
PANJIM: Konkani Kala Kendra Merces Goy will be organizing a Konkani Musical Show on January 16 in memory of Late Dr Jack de Sequiera, Father of Opinion Poll 1967 as ‘Goycho Osmitai Dis’, near Merces Church, Merces at 6:30 pm. The musical show is by Anthony San and his troupe in association with Directorate of Art and Culture and supported by TAG.
Fashion calendar launch
PANJIM: Make-up artist and fashion photographer, Sanjeev Salvi in coordination with the Promoter, R. R Shetiye and Fashion Designer, Shalaka Sandhu will organize the launch of Goa’s first fashion calendar 2013 (IInd edition)- “AATMAA”, which means soul, and also a photography exhibition, on January 8 at 10 am, at exhibition hall, Kala Academy, Panjim. Tourism Minister, Dilip Parulekar will be the chief guest while St Andre MLA, Vishnu Surya Wagh will be the guest of honour. All are invited for the calendar launch and exhibition and have been urged to give back their valuable feedback, says a press release.
Accident prone zones identified in Ponda
PONDA: The Ponda Traffic Cell (PTC) has identified around 38 accident-prone zones in Ponda Taluka that need urgent attention and has sent a proposal to the government to undertake necessary measures to ensure safety to motorists.
According to data available with the PTC, 35 deaths were caused due to road mishaps in Ponda taluka last year alone.
In 2012, the PTS booked about 27,430 cases for various violations of the Motor Vehicle Act and collected fines to the tune of Rs 29.39 lakh. A large number of violations (5187) pertained to driving without helmets.
“We have identified 38 accident-prone zones that need attention. Necessary measures, including pruning of trees and road-widening work in these accident-prone zones, have been sent to the concerned authorities”, said PTC PI Prabhod Shirwaikar.
Shirwaikar informed that the Road Safety Week, which is observed during the first week of January, will have various programs aimed at road safety awareness.
“During this week, we will conduct various awareness programmes on road safety for students, motorcycle pilots, taxi, bus, good carrier drivers as well as drivers in government departments,” informed Shirwaikar.
Lok Utsav organised at Quepem
SANGUEM: Christian Adivassi Sanghattna, Quepem, in association with Department of Art and Culture recently organised the Lok Utsav 2012 at Quepem Municipal Garden.
The Lok Utsav was inaugurated by social worker from Curtorim Jose Francisco Gomes in the presence of Quepem MLA Chandrakant Kavlekar, Fatorda MLA Vijay Sardessai and others.
Speaking at the Lok Utsav, Sardessai lost no time in criticising Tribal Affairs Minister Ramesh Tawadkar for failing to attend the function, despite being formally invited. Sardessai also criticized many Congress heavyweights and said they had gone underground, while the opposition legislators were “tight-lipped and sleeping on the airport issue.”
Sardessai claimed the people would face various problems if the State government were to close down Dabolim airport and go ahead with the Mopa airport.
Curtorim MLA Reginald Lourenco assured the members of the tribal community that he would personally attend to the Quepem Mamlatdar’s office to inquire over the delay caused in issuing residence and other certificates to the Tribals.
The assurance was based on complaints by members of Christian Adivasi Sanghattna that officials at Quepem Mamlatdar’s office were harassing the tribals regarding residence certificates.
Former MP Ramakant Angle also spoke on the occasion and recalled the pain he had to undergo to get the status of ST for Gavda, Kunbi and Velip community.
On the occasion, two personalities from the tribal community, Jose Francisco Gomes and Pobre Fernandes, were felicitated by Angle.
Live Christmas Crib at Assagao
PANJIM: A Crib depicting a live nativity Christmas village scene, which has been set up in the church compound where in the parishioners of Our Lady of Miracles Church, Badem- Assagao, are performing live the birth scene of Jesus Christ. The nativity village set up consists of a stable, palace, flower shop, inn, pottery, distillery, a winery, bakery, forest and a small fountain.
Fr Siran Rebello is serving a resident parish who along with the villagers contributed to this event.
The crib can be witnessed between 7 pm to 9 pm.
