Negligence by PWD officials kills bike rider at Nuvem

MARGAO: In a shocking incident at Nuvem, a bike rider died on the spot after a tree fell on him, on Tuesday. However, the concerned government authorities came under heavy criticism from the citizens for not taking the required safety precautions at the time of cutting down the dangerous tree.

As informed by Maina-Curtorim Police, name of victim is Richard Costa, a resident of Kirbhat, Nuvem and the accident occurred in the evening hours. 

Tree cutting work was underway on the National Highway at Nuvem by the Public Works Department. While the victim was proceeding towards Nuvem on his bike, suddenly a tree came crushing down on him.

The locals have alleged that the PWD did not take the required safety precautions of the rider passing by. However, officials of the concerned authorities have claimed that the victim proceeded by ignoring the instructions. 

Expressing his shock at the unfortunate incident, Leader of the Opposition Digambar Kamat demanded that PWD Minister Deepak Pauskar must immediately order a high-level inquiry into the incident which cost the life of an innocent person and to initiate stern action against all those who are responsible.

“I demand strict action against all those responsible. PWD is now turned into Public Wrath Department,” Kamat said.

Kamat also demand that Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant must immediately give compensation to the family of the victim.
