PANJIM/MARGAO: The Department of Legal Metrology carried out massive drive throughout Goa for the last two days and raided several shops for violations related to the use of weights and measures including weighing instrument and measuring instrument and also packaged commodities under the provision of Legal Metrology Act 2009.
The teams inspected 20 shops in Margao and booked two cases with respect to mobile phone handsets and accessories. Altogether, three mobile packages and 60 mobile accessories packages were seized and detained for not bearing mandatory declaration as required under Legal Metrology Act 2009, read with Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011.

On Friday, the teams inspected five shops with respect to weight and measures including weighing instrument and measuring instrument and also packaged commodities at meeting point junction, Verna and two cases were booked, one unverified weighing instrument was seized and detained and 43 mobile accessories packages were seized and detained for not bearing mandatory declaration as required under the Act.
Subsequently, 15 shops were inspected with respect to weight and measures including weighing instrument and measuring instrument and also packaged commodities in Zuarinagar area and two cases were booked, one unverified weighing instrument was seized and detained and 53 door accessories packages including branded door locks were seized and detained for not bearing mandatory declaration and also for smudging and altering maximum retail price and month and year of manufacture as required under Legal Metrology Act.
At Mapusa, the inspectors booked nine cases against a dairy milk society, bar and restaurant, vegetable and general store and tiles shop and seized eight peg measures, three capacity measures, three weighing instruments (all unverified and kept for use in trading premises) and 550 packages of tiles for not bearing mandatory declaration as required under the Act.
On Saturday, 10 cases were booked in Siolim area against a bar and restaurant, general stores, supermarket, chicken shop, vegetable shop, courier firm and hardware shop and seized four peg measures, seven weighing instruments (all unverified and kept for use in trading premises) and 91 packages of hardware items for not bearing mandatory declaration as required under the Act.
In Canacona and Sanguem areas, 50 traders were inspected and two cases were booked with respect to unverified weighing instrument which was kept for used in trading premises and 1430 packages of tiles were seized and detained for not bearing mandatory declaration as required under the Act.
Subsequently, 20 traders were inspected and two cases were booked for using unverified weighing instrument which was kept for use in trading premises.
At Ponda, 70 traders were inspected and 13 cases were booked with respect to unverified weighing instrument which was kept for used in trading premises in fish outlet, vegetable shop and bakery shop.
Assistant Controller of Legal Metrology Nitin P Purushan said that the ongoing surprise drive will continue throughout Goa and he appealed to all consumers to first examine whether the weighing instrument is verified or not and also to see the verification certificate issued by the Department of Legal Metrology, before buying any commodity with weighing instrument. “The consumers also before buying any packaged commodity should check mandatory declaration,” he said.
