PANJIM: The Goa Human Right Commission (GHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of Herald news report regarding the death of a youth at Nuvem owing to negligence by authorities of the Public Works Department.
The Commission of Chairperson Justice U V Bakre and members Desmond D’Costa and Pramod Kamat has issued a notice to PWD and Deputy Conservator of Forests (Margao) to inquire into the matter and submit a report. Notice is also issued to the Executive Engineer (Works Division) XIV (NH), PWD, Fatorda to submit a report by August 8, 2021.
A young scooter rider Richard Costa died on the spot after a tree fell on him, on Tuesday as authorities came under heavy criticism from the citizens for not taking the required safety precautions at the time of cutting down the dangerous tree.
Herald’s report titled ‘Negligence by PWD officials kills bike rider at Nuvem’ has been referred to by the GHRC while taking suo motu cognisance.
The locals have alleged that the PWD did not take the required safety precautions of the rider passing by. However, officials of the concerned authorities have claimed that the victim proceeded by ignoring the instructions.
