ARAMBOL: Rajani Ibrampurkar was elected unopposed as the sarpanch of Arambol panchayat, on Monday. The post had fallen vacant after the previous sarpanch Bernard Fernandes had resigned last month. BDO officer Bhiva Thakur was the election officer and declared Ibrampurkar as the new sarpanch as she was the sole applicant.
Deputy sarpanch Anupama Mayekar, panch members Sonali Majji, Santan Fernandes, Bernard Fernandes, Sushant Gaude, Divya Gadekar and Bhikaji Naik backed Ibrampurkar’s candidacy, while panch Gunaji Thakur was absent for the meeting.
“I thank my fellow panch members for their cooperation. Presently the respective court’s order is being executed and none of us are bigger than the law. I request villagers to cooperate with me as I am new to the role and trying to learn from scratch,” newly elected sarpanch Ibrampurkar said.
Meanwhile, former sarpanch Bernard Fernandes said that he had to resign keeping in mind the long-term welfare of the village. It may be recalled that the High Court of Bombay at Goa has ordered inquiry in the matter with regards to illegal constructions and also into the functioning of the panchayat body.
