PANJIM: The Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) has sought a report from the Goa government regarding the digging of roads at Ribandar, following a complaint filed by Advocate Aires Rodrigues.
Acting Goa Human Rights Commission chairman A D Salkar has asked the Chief Secretary, North Goa Collector and the Managing Director of the Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited (IPSCDL) to submit the report by May 29 over allegations that human rights of the residents of Ribandar are grossly violated owing to the haphazard conduct of the road works and government’s inaction to intervene in the matter.
Rodrigues along with his complaint submitted to the Goa Human Rights Commission 40 photographs of the current state of Ribandar roads which have been dug over the last four weeks while endangering the lives and property of the residents of area.
“The entire stretch of Ribandar is very densely populated and there is heavy traffic in the area with the roads being very narrow. Very alarmingly huge dug up trenches are left open all over, and there is also a lot of piled up debris lying along the roads posing a health and traffic hazard. It is most distressing that there is now no room for the pedestrians to walk along the Ribandar roads causing great inconvenience and injustice to the residents,” he stated.
The complainant stated that as the monsoon was fast approaching, on account of the inaction by the authorities there could be a catastrophic calamity bringing untold miseries to the residents of Ribandar in gross violation of their human rights.
