Bless us Goencho Saib!

It is pertinent to note what Francis Xavier said before his death: “I shall not return to Goa, my body yes, here it shall remain.” His words became prophetic as surely as his wish was granted after his death. The question that comes to mind is why did Francis Xavier wish to remain in Goa? He had traveled to many places evangelizing but his last trip was to China where he died on the lonely island of Sancian. As per his wish, after many eventful incidents after his death, his remains did come to rest permanently here at the Basilica of Bom Jesus.
The Jesuit priest was declared a Saint on March12,1622.The first Solemn Exposition of the Sacred Relics of St. Francis Xavier was held in February 1782, ever since then the Exposition of his Sacred Relics has been held a number of times the present one being the 17th Exposition. Though the earlier ones have been tension free, in the recent past till date it has become a concern for the Church and the govt. to make it safe and smooth for the devotees who visit Old Goa with great devotion to seek blessings and favours from St. Francis Xavier.
Keeping aside all differences, religion, class, status and nationality, people have displayed solidarity expressing deep devotion and love for the Saint nay to live in peace and brotherhood. Successive govt. in the past always moved in to do the needful to assist the Church in whatever way possible. The support extended to the Church by the BJP govt. in Goa in 2004 and now at present is noteworthy in spite of it being tagged communal. It must strive to maintain peace, harmony and unity in the State keeping vested elements out its functioning.
The Sacred Relics of St. Francis Xavier who is also named the Patron of Goa has come to stay permanently in the land of our ancestors to keep the people united in love and faith drawing closer to him each year for over 5 centuries which itself is miraculous. Devotion to him does not seem to fade but grow each passing year. As was this year, the inauguration of the Exposition marked the celebration of love, unity and faith. May St. Francis Xavier protect Goa and all those who will come to venerate him during these 44 days while his sacred remains are being exposed for a closer touch and feel! May he grant us our prayer for Goa always to remain peaceful, tranquil and well protected. May he listen to us as we pray: Bless us Goencho Saib!
