CANACONA: Insisting that the mid-day meal scheme be either discarded or modified, aggrieved parents of Shri Mallikarjun Vidyalaya have claimed that the meals supplied could jeopardize the health of their children.
“The government should not waste time and wait for a major calamity to occur, but should quickly abolish the mid-day meal scheme for the sake of health and lives of our children,” remarked the School PTA member Dilip Dessai.
Another PTA member Deepak Dessai, who has two children studying at Shri Mallikarjun Vidyalaya, added: “With virtually no authority serious in carrying out regular checks to avert food poisoning, the choice should be left to the parents to feed their children.”
Incidentally, many parents who were outside the Community Health Centre (CHC) even suggested that the government could consider modifying the mid-day meal scheme.
“If the government is spending Rs 5-10 per day per child in the mid-day meal scheme, then the same amount can be passed on to the parents, who can use the money to feed their child in the best and safest manner,” remarked a parent.
“Even if the food prepared at a particular household becomes contaminated, it will be limited to a particular child and not as it has happened at Shri Mallikarjun,” the parent added.
