PANJIM: Police Sub Inspector Gautam Shetkar has come under police radar after growing suspicion around him for abetting the suicide of a new police constable recruit earlier this month.
Crime Branch (CB), investigating the suicide of a lady constable has interrogated Shetkar for a continuous 4 to 5 days while his deposition could be sought again.
The investigation began after the deceased’s grieving family lodged a complaint accusing Shetkar of compelling the 20-year-old to end her life.
Reliable sources in the police department said the PSI admitted to being ‘friendly’ with the victim.
“The PSI and the new constable recruit, both attached to Verna police station, were reportedly in regular contact with each other. He has admitted of being friendly with her and both had mutually called off their friendship. We are investigating his claims,” said the source.
The lady constable died four days after her attempted suicide. She was undergoing treatment at Goa Medical College at the time of her death. Verna police had launched a probe, but after the victim’s family members approached the police brass demanding action against the PSI, the case was transferred to Crime Branch. Sources further reveal that the victim and the PSI’s call details and text/Whatsapp messages are being examined.
The Mahila Congress had earlier demanded the suspension of the PSI alleging his involvement in the suicide case.
Vasco-based NGO Savera had also written to Crime Branch seeking a detailed inquiry into the entire episode also as nude photos, suspected to be of the lady constable, are being circulated on social media.
The NGO has demanded action against the guilty as they ‘feel the unknown male in the photos could be blackmailing the deceased forcing her to committee suicide’. “There is also a possibility that the photos were leaked and another person might be blackmailing her,” the NGO had said urging to ensure the circulation of the photos is stopped.
