MARGAO: Traffic discipline is going to be enforced strictly in Margao in the next few days with traffic cell personnel manning the traffic signals to punish traffic violators. Stop lines have been clearly painted at the major traffic junctions of Margao like the Municipal square, Colva Circle, Bolshe Circle amongst others. Presently, monitoring at these junctions is undertaken on a trial basis where persons crossing the “Stop Line” is cautioned and let off.
However, by the end of the month, anybody crossing the “Stop Line” will not only be fined but even run the risk of having his license suspended.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Prabod Shirwaikar pointed out that there are Supreme Court rulings endorsing the traffic rules permitting suspension of license for traffic rule violations and added the Traffic Cell at least in Margao, will commence implementing it shortly.
Incidentally, the Traffic Cell’s proposal to install traffic signals has also taken off with signals commissioned at Bolshe Circle and more planned at other places.
However, it appears the traffic signals will come up only in Fatorda area of Margao Municipal Council jurisdiction as the MLA representing that constituency is a minister in the present government while Margao is represented by an Opposition MLA.
