CANACONA: Strong contenders Maina Sports Club outclassed tournament favourite’s Navelim Villagers Union 3-1 to win the 5th Fr Bento Martin’s memorial inter-village All Goa football tournament organized by St Anne’s Cultural Group in association with Canacona Sports Academy.
To the chagrin of Navelim Village Union, Serterio Monteiro shot home in the very first minute to give an early lead to Maina SC.
As the match progressed, striker Mario Mascarenhas doubled the lead. Navelim’s Avlon Gmoes struck in the dying minutes of the first half to reduce the margin before the breather.
On changing ends, Maina increased their lead 3-0 through a beautifully converted kick taken from outside the D-area by John Fernandes and sealed the fate of Navelim Villagers Union.
The winners were richer by Rs 50,000 while Navelim Villagers Union had to be content with Rs 30,000.
Chief guest Quepem MLA Chandrakant (Babu) Kavlekar presented the prizes to the winners in the presence of Agonda Parish Priest Fr Romeo D’Silva and guest of honours village sarpanch Navneeta Naik Gaunkar, Goa Horticulture Board Director Remy Borges.
Other individual prizes: Player of the final Avlon Gomes (Navelim villagers Union), Best Goalkeeper (Maina SC).
