PONDA: A leopard attacked and killed a domestic goat while it was grazing along with a herd of goats on a hill between Kavlem and Borim, on Tuesday. This is the first time a leopard attacked domestic animals in broad daylight. Usually, the attacks would occur at night.
Goat owner Rama Doifode said that his son was grazing his herd of goats on a hill at Paniwada, when suddenly a leopard attacked the herd, snatched a goat in its jaw and fled from the spot. The entire herd of goats got scattered due to the leopard attack, he said adding that his shepherd boy son was frightened by the attack.
Rama Doifode said that the value of the goat snatched by the leopard was around Rs 5000.
He said that eight families are residing in an isolated hilly area far away from Kavlem village and they are fully dependent rearing goats and selling their milk. Therefore, he requested the forest department to take note of the attack and take preventive measures to control the menace of leopard or lay cage to trap the animal.
He feared that the leopard might attack his herd of goats once again.
Meanwhile, the locals of Kavlem and Durbhat have complained that leopards are seen crossing the main road at night, little away from the residential area.
