Seamen urge Centre to bring home captain detained in China

MARGAO: Expressing support to Indian Captain Jagvir Singh Sidhu who has been detained at Ningbao Port in China since July 7, Goan Seamen Association of India has demanded that the Indian government should intervene in the matter and get him released from China.
Captain Sidhu was working on the ship M V Hai Yue belonging to V Star Ltd that was carrying chicken cargo from Taiwan to China when it was detained and it was found that the ship did not have permission for shipping chicken to China.
The ship was detained on charges of smuggling chicken from Taiwan and it is learnt that the vessel had earlier too made similar trips without permission.
The Chinese owners paid the initial fees asked by the Chinese lawyers and now are refusing to make any more payments due to which Captain Sidhu languishes in a Chinese jail.
Goan Seamen Association of India President Franklin D’Costa said his organisation is morally behind the detained captain and appealed to the Central government to intervene in the matter and get the Indian captain back to the country.
