MARGAO: The State government has drawn flak for failing to prioritise the repair of the dilapidated South Goa Comunidade building.
It may be recalled that recently citizens of the Shadow Council for Margao (SCM) such as Domnic Fernandes had got together to clean up the abandoned building during the rains.

“It has been 75 days since we had taken up the clearing up of the iconic Communidade building at Margao. Prior to this initiative, we had been visiting those concerned with the Administration of Communidades and the PWD to prevail upon them to speed up the efforts to maintain the structure,” said Savio Coutinho, SCM convenor.
“While the Administrator of Communidade stated that the PWD has been requested to take up the repairs; the PWD on the other hand gave us an explanation that the GSR rates are not revised as such no contractor is quoting for such works. Hence, the PWD finds it appropriate to wait until the GSR rates are revised, and prepare the estimates for the tender process only after the revision,” Coutinho added.
He further lamented that going by this pace, it seems unlikely that this iconic structure will ever get the attention due from the government and that it may finally end up like the Heritage structure of the old Camara de Salcete building at Margao’s old market.
